As a 72 year old MD, this book troubles me and so does her PBS TV fund-raising show. The book does mention the value of the Microbiome, or the spectrum of intestinal bacteria. Yes we know we need to take care of our microbiome with fiber rich plant based foods. Unquestionably, we need plenty of greens, fruits and vegetables. Fine. Yes, it is known and proven scientifically that going 12-14 hours per day without food intake is valuable. After 4 pm or so, our metabolism declines rapidly so our evening meal needs to be very light, mostly consisting of foods like vegetables. This is called the circadian rhythm based eating pattern. It is proven. And agreed, we need to have a good intake of good fats high in Omega 3 fatty acids like nuts and seeds. Those are an essential part of my diet, particularly with breakfast.Beyond that, things go rapidly downhill when she pushes COLLAGEN. This product is hydrolyzed animal product taken from the carcasses of dead animals and fish. It does not contain essential amino acids that we need for health. Besides, all proteins we consume are broken down into amino acids by the intestines, and those amino acids are re-assembled as body proteins. As to bone broth, it has been encouraged by some Ayurvedic physicians as well, but I question its value. And I question the so called scientific studies that collagen helps with skin elasticity, muscle mass and degenerative arthritis. I do not, ever, ever, ever plan to take collagen and support the slaughter houses and their profit margins. We humans absolutely do not need animal products.So why do I say this book is going to disappoint you? First of all, run away from any of these 10, 14 or 28 day programs. We need to eat for life. The most important thing, I believe, is that our chronically high stress level pushes fat into our bellies. It is a protective mechanism. Plus, sugar and highly processed carbohydrates are very prone to push fat into our bellies. People can lose 5, 10, or 15 pounds, and be seriously dismayed that their belly fat has not budged much. During weight loss, the liver glycogen burns up first, then the body tends to eat up our own muscles, causing the muscles to become flabby. Then the body burns the fat stored under the skin. The belly fat is the last to be burned.So what to do? A plant based whole foods diet. Drastically cut down eating after 4 or 5 pm. Its the old "have breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper" kind of thing. Maintain exercise, 20 to 30 minutes a day. Some days aerobic, some days resistance work to maintain muscle mass. Learn mindfulness to keep stress levels down. Smile! Mindfulness also helps what I call "mindful indulgence" in rich foods. To tell people to abandon rich foods like chocolate, cake, cheese etc is not going to work. But mindfulness will allow us to take delight in small amounts of these rich foods, keeping the intake of such foods to an absolute maximum of 100-200 calories a day. A one ounce piece of chocolate has more calories than a pound of broccoli! We must learn to really minimize these sensual rich foods after it gets dark! Watch out when you go out to a restaurant for dinner and the waiter brings you the dessert menu with a list of thousand-calorie desserts!So there it is. Men tend to be apples and women tend to be pears; that is our biological nature. However, excess belly fat is a sure sign of a higher risk of serious disease in both men and women, so we do need to pay attention; pay serious attention!
I've done Dr. KellyAnn's 21 day bonebroth diet and loved it. I can honestly say that this is my new favorite go-to diet, though, whenever I feel I need a "re-boot" or to remove stubborn lbs. I started this diet with 19 lbs. to lose. My first round of 10 days I lost 8 lbs. I then went on a 2 week trip and stayed as close to the maintenance plan (or 80/20 plan) as possible. I'm now on round two of the 10 day and feeling so good! This diet has helped me with joint pain, as well as my skin, hair and nails look and feel great - and I'VE LOST THE BLOAT!! This is easy to follow and for me an important way to correct some things that I've seen others take medication for. I'm 51 years old and don't take medication of any kind after following Dr. KellyAnn's plan!
